(I wrote this several months ago and came across it again today, and I thought it would be fun to post here. This was an experience I had at my job, and after this event, I wrote it down in a silly story. So, without further ado, here it is.)

A Paw-sitively Interesting Morning

I’m sure that all of us have heard about library cats-- cats that reside in libraries or bookstores and live glorious lives amongst the stacks, the books, and patrons willing to give them a good rub behind the ears. Some of us may have even secretly wished for such a library with a little furry friend to hang out by our side at the circulation desk and give us a good pick-me-up when the crazy hustle and bustle of unruly students gets to us. However, sometimes, the reality is different than the imagined dream…

Upon my arrival to work, I sat at my desk, with half-lidded eyes not fully yet awake, still wishing I was back at the beginning of the three-day weekend now long passed. I sipped my coffee as I logged into the computer. I heard a rustling, but I paid no heed as I figured an overzealous math teacher was already in the Math Lab. Yet, the sound reached my ears again, but it was… closer. I looked up from the computer, expecting to see a teacher approaching the desk, but there was no one. My first thought: There's a mouse or a rat in here. Now, to be fair, I think mice and rats are adorable, just… not in my library. (The last thing I needed was a diseased rodent in the library who would bite the students and turn them all into zombies bent on my destruction.) With that thought in mind, all sleep wore off, and I was looking this way and that for the intruder. Then, I heard the rustling again, louder and closer, and I realized that whatever was in here was bigger than a mouse or a rat. A raccoon? Possibly. A skunk? Oh, please, no.

Then, I saw it. Two black paws stretched up, pawing at one of the doors. My visitor was a lovely little black cat. I think the poor thing must have realized that it did not have the library to itself as it had wished and was desperate to escape the library clerk, who would inevitably have adopted it right then and there…

Sensing that its freedom would be taken away, the black cat hid from the view of the library clerk, sneaking in and out of the library bookshelves, hoping to escape the clutches of the dreaded library clerk. Much to the cat’s dismay, another human came along, looking for him. The cat was clever, though, much more clever than the humans, and seeing his chance, bolted through the library, towards the door that was standing propped open. Why was the door open? The cat did not know. All it knew was that it had alighted to freedom. It bounded away towards the gate and stopped suddenly. It paused and looked back, tail swishing as it saw the dreaded library clerk wave to it before closing the door.

The End.
